OCD

Hypnotherapy for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can help you stop feeling overwhelmed and get back to leading a normal life.

What is OCD?

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a common disorder in which a person has uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts (obsessions) and/or behaviors (compulsions) that he or she feels the urge to repeat over and over.

Obsessions are recurrent and persistent thoughts, impulses, or images that cause distressing emotions such as anxiety or fear.

While people with OCD may recognize that these thoughts or impulses are unreasonable, the distress caused by them is difficult to resolve and leads to people trying to ease the distress of the obsessions with compulsions.

Compulsions are repetitive behaviors that a person feels driven to perform in response to their obsession to prevent or reduce distress or anxiety.

These compulsions can then become excessive responses (such as excessive hand washing due to the fear of contamination) or actions that make a normal daily routine impossible.

What are the signs you have OCD?

Signs of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder:

  • Obsessions such as:
    • fear of harming yourself or others by mistake
    • fear of contamination by disease, infection or an unpleasant substance
  • Compulsions – repetitive behaviours or mental acts such as:
    • cleaning and hand washing
    • checking – such as checking doors are locked or that the gas is off
    • counting
    • ordering and arranging
    • repeating words in their head
    • avoiding places and situations that could trigger obsessive thoughts

How does hypnotherapy for OCD work?

Hypnotherapy for OCD is a way to help those with OCD get to the root of what is causing it, change their mindsets so that their obsessions and compulsions have less control over their daily lives, and learn techniques and skills to use to live a more confident life.

It works by focusing not on changing the obsessive thoughts but by helping a person reduce their level of reactivity to those thoughts. By doing this, it’s possible to reduce the stress and anxiety which is what leads to the compulsive behavior, and with the anxiety of not performing compulsive behavior gone, you can break free of the hold OCD has on your life!

Hypnosis also provides deep relaxation which works to address the underlying causes of your OCD and to neutralize the anxiety. Using techniques to identify “OCD thoughts and urges” but without identifying with them leads you to be able to refrain from performing the associated compulsive behavior!
